Poster for newspaper

For my poster my aim was to give it a traditional look. To keep be able to link it with my radio advertisement I have gave it an historical look by using the coloured pencil option on photo shop on underlining to create a certain look for my poster

I believe the Orange/brown look helps it stand out from other posters which will be in competition with mine to catch the readers attention.

Then I decided to add text to the poster I went with the catchphrase of 'We've been around longer than the Picton clock' to give a sense of the history of my newspaper as the Picton clock has been around Liverpool for over 150 years. Also by using the font 'Georgia' which has an historical look to it. I have then added the the title off of my front page to add continuity between my different pieces which I believe has been effective. I have designed my poster by studying the art work of 'Lowry ' who uses a similar style in his art work.

Radio advertisement of newspaper

The radio advert

When creating my radio advert I decided to be creative in a way by using quotes out of my newspaper like 'news that matters' which is an effective part of my radio advert. This is the script I used for my thirty second advertisement.

Radio Script

'There’s no better way, to start your day than by reading your tried and trusted ‘South Liverpool Mail’ Proudly serving south Liverpool for over one hundred years –
‘The South Liverpool Mail’ Your Local newspaper providing Local news covering local issues that matter to you– 12 seconds

‘The South Liverpool Mail’- news that matters'

This was performed by member of my class who had experience on the speaking on the radio as my voice was not suitable for the message I was attempting to give.

Soundtrack

This is the full music of the background music I used a small section of -

This powerful music goes well with the script because it motivating music and my aim is to motivate them into purchasing my newspaper which I believe this does very well.

The Radio Advert

This is the completed version of the radio advert which also shows the poster to show the link and cohesion between the radio advert and the poster.

Here are the images of me and my classmate completing the recording this is the image of me on the mixing decks, mixing it up.

creating a poster practice

I have decided to create a poster to practice my poster creating skills for when I make my actual poster which is the one which will be part of my coursework. The preliminary task to create a poster is important because its role along with the radio advert will to be promote the newspaper I have created. It is essential that this is an effect piece of advertisement so I have selected an iconic symbol of south Liverpool which is the Picton Clock as the background to my poster so that the audience can relate to it.

Next I want to add the logo used on the front page of my newspaper so that when the reader glances at the poster they can immediately relate it back to my newspaper and connect the two together.

The next step in the creation of the poster is to be creative is coming up with a slogan which will catch the readers eye immediately when glancing at the poster to make them stop and read further. I have come up with the slogan 'NEWZ THAT MATTERS' as my paper tackles serious issues along with news that carries entertainment purposes.

An other way in which the audience can connect the poster with the newspaper is the way which i have used the same colours taken from my newspapers pages so that it is very easy for the reader to subconsciously connect the two. I have used colours such as dark red, grey and white which are key features of my newspaper. The final piece of my poster is to add the newspapers website so they are ware they can gain access to it via the Internet.

This simplistic but effect poster uses now large quantities of text as the purpose of the poster is to catch the eye of people walking down the street which i believe this does to perfection.

Production of second page of newspaper

For my second page My aim was to develop on two of the articles from my front page which included the story about the murder and the articles about the local bars. my aim is to involve more text on this page of my newspaper due to the fact that it is more of an informative piece as i have already drawn my audience towards the newspaper through an attractive front page.

First draft

I have decided to include a weather update as a part of my second page because this is something which people are generally interested in. Also there is two adverts which are going to be about a restaurant and a bar opening soon because of interest my target audience has in this subject. The article involving universities is essential because of the target audience of my newspaper will either be in university or looking to go to university and the article will help them in making the correct choice.

Second draft

-

The colours I have incorporated into this page are masculine colours which fits the target audience of young males and also the colours red and grey are colours i have used on my first page which shows signs of continuity.

Third Draft

It is evident from this draft that I have used far more text than on the front page I have added short paragraphs which state what the article is going to be about which i used from looking at my style model which is the Daily Mail which also uses this technique. All i have left to do now is add in the photos I have taken which will complete my second page

Fourth Draft

In this draft I have added in the photos which I took using a Dolby digital camera of Liverpool hope university and bars which are around my local area. these pictures will interest my readers as they are places they will know well.

Final Draft

For my final draft significant changes have been made, such as adding an additional column at the top of the page next to the weather section were I indicate the horoscopes and other puzzles available inside the newspaper. Also i have changed the story in the bottom left hand corner from the new wetherspoons to an article about a new sans buries which is under construction and lastly I have added an article at the bottom of the page called the 'Redknapp review' were a former Liverpool player has his own column talking about the club.

Production of First Page of newspaper

For the production of the first page of my newspaper, I decided to use the Local Liverpool Newspaper 'The Echo' as a pastiche for my newspaper when designing the basic layout.

Production stage one :

The next stage was to decide were each story would be situated on the front page

Production stage two:

I now started to develop my coursework by adding colour to the selected areas such as were the football news is I have added the correct colours which are associated with football teams. In my newspaper this is Liverpool and Everton and the colours red and blue. I used the colour of red as the background colour behind my title because of the popularity of the colour with other newspapers.

Production Stage three

The next stage was to complete the text which would appear on the front page. my stories were very informative and something which my target audience would be attracted to. The target audience 20-30 around the area's selected will be drawn towards a story about a bar on Allerton road and also they would be interested in an a story about politics seeing as young people are becoming more politically aware. The incident story will also be an attractive article to read. The catchy slogan at the top of the page 'your daily news fix' will also make people pick up the newspaper.

Production stage Four:

Production stage 5

In this stage I have decided to change the layout of my front page I have taken off some of the borders around each of the stories because newspapers such as the 'Liverpool Echo' don't use borders as much as I have used and as the Echo is my style model I have decided to make the changes. I have also changed the bottom advertisements at the bottom of the page because they were not my own images, so I went out and took a picture of my local boots store and used that in my advertisement.

Production stage 6

This stage is close to the finished article. I have removed such a large section dedicated to football as I believe making it smaller will enhance the appearance of my main article, which aim is to attract readers as I don't want other stories taking attention off of it. I also want to reduce the number of words used in the main article heading as it is too word heavy, so therefore using about four words reduced from seven will enhance it further.

Production stage 7

This is the seventh draft of my front page of my A2 media coursework. I have enlarged the heading of my main story which will grab the readers attention instantly when they glance at the newspaper and because it involves a murder, my research has showed me that stories involving incident force people in to purchasing newspapers because they are shocked by the headline and mine of 'SERIAL KILLER STRIKES AGAIN' would be extremely shocking. Therefore I believe this is an effective marketing strategy to enhance the appearance of my newspaper against the completion such as the Echo and the Mersey mart.

Production stage 8 -

For this stage of the production of my first page I have decided to change the small football section in the bottom left hand corner. I have replaced it with a review from a former Liverpool FC and television sports pundit 'Jamie Redknapp' who has his own collum in my newspaper were he discusses different areas of the club such as players, managers and financiers relating to the club. I have also taken out the image of local politition Warren Barely as is was not an image I had taken myself.

Final Draft

Significant changes have been made to the final draft of the front page of my newspaper. My aim was to add more of a realistic effect to the front page by taking a picture of a disk and then by using the software 'photo shop' crop it until it it completely finished. Then I have entered text which explains about the culture supplement which I have mentioned in my radio advert so that the reader can connect the two. Then lastly I have added an advert for boots along which a gift voucher which Will be further encouragement for the customer to purchase my newspaper. I have used the blue colour which is immediately recognisable to be associated with boots.

Design and Colour Scheme

For my First page it essential that the title will catch the readers attention the moment they glance at my newspaper, this is why I have chosen to use the font Broadway because of the historical context of the font. The font originates from around the 1950's which makes the newspaper look like its been around for a long time and that it is a successful traditional newspaper. My aim was to give the newspaper a traditional look.

The colour for my font is red because I believe this colour will stand out the most for the reader when they are deciding on whether or not to purchase the newspaper. I believe this colour is extremely influential and is a major part of my overall strategy of promoting my newspaper to the general public and especially my target audience.

After further consideration I have made another choice on what colour background should be attached to my Title. I have come to the conclusion that their is not a suitable colour to go into my background so i have decided to use the colour red as the background colour and white as the font colour itself. The red will still standout and promote the brand well but it will occupy more of a space than before

With my newspaper targeting mostly males but still being women friendly. I have used masculine colours which will make the newspaper more of an attractive proposition when deciding on whether other not to purchase the newspaper. Masculine colours psychologically draw males towards the newspaper due to their connections mentally with these colours. These colours consist of red, blue, white and black.

Radio Practice

In this session we recorded a preliminary task were we split into groups and created a radio advert. We created a newspaper called the Liverpool Gazette which in a made up newspaper so we could gain skills in creating a radio advert which is part of are coursework along with creating the first two pages of a local newspaper and a poster advertising the newspaper. Me and another two individuals went and researched background music to put into our radio advert and we decided on using the crystal maze theme tune :

Then we created a script which included the price of the advert and what type of news in available such as:

  • Politics

  • Entertainment

  • Sport

Then we went into the recording studio and produced the advert which was a success, after that we went onto the computer programme Adobe Audition were the advert was edited. For the editing I merged the soundtrack and the advert created to complete the task. We then amplified the sound on the programme to create the correct balance between the soundtrack and the singing. Now that I have completed this preliminary task I find it easier to create a radio advert due to the skills which I have gained in both the recording studio and on Adobe Audition.

This is the image of our radio advert on the software :
